The Captive Throne by Kenley Davidson

The Captive Throne continues Evaraine and Danric’s story and feels very much like a transitional book in the series—one that focuses more on emotional resolution and setting up future events than on nonstop action.

After everything they’ve been through, Evaraine and Danric finally reach the point we’ve been waiting for: honesty.

Secrets come out. Walls come down. Feelings are admitted.

And honestly… it’s about time.

Their marriage-of-convenience storyline slowly shifts into something more genuine as they begin to trust each other and share the truths they’ve both been hiding. There’s a lot of internal growth here—learning to rely on each other, choosing loyalty, and deciding whether love is worth the risk.

The stakes are still high, though. Evaraine is forced to leave almost immediately after their wedding to try to save her father and her kingdom, heading into danger largely on her own. Danric, determined not to lose her, follows—desperate to prove himself and protect the woman he loves.

The plot definitely moves, but for me, this book felt quieter and slower compared to earlier installments. I found myself less emotionally hooked than I was with Leisa and Kyrion’s story or even the mysteries surrounding Vaniell.

If I’m being honest, a big part of my motivation was simply wanting to get closer to Vaniell’s storyline and learn what in the world he’s been planning this whole time. (Anyone else reading like, “Okay but where IS he?”)

That said, I’m glad I stuck with it.

There are a few solid surprises toward the end that shake things up and hint that bigger events are coming. And I always enjoy the moments when Leisa and Kyrion show up.

While this one wasn’t my favorite in terms of tension or romance, it does tie up loose ends between Danric and Evaraine and clearly sets the stage for what’s next.

If you’re invested in the overall world and characters, it’s definitely worth reading to keep the story moving forward.
