Fit for a Prince by Abigail Manning

Sometimes you pick up a book expecting a light fantasy romance… and then suddenly it’s midnight, your cocoa is cold, and you’re telling yourself “just one more chapter” for the fifth time.

That was Fit for a Prince for me.

From the very first pages, the story wastes no time pulling you straight into chaos. Diaspro’s life is shattered when her kingdom is attacked and destroyed in a single devastating night. Before she even has time to grieve, she’s captured by the enemy king and thrown into prison. The emotional whiplash alone had me hooked — because you can feel just how quickly everything she dreamed of is ripped away.

And then the situation somehow gets worse.

Instead of rotting away in a cell, Diaspro is summoned by the king of Aemastia and told she must compete for the hand of one of his sons. His reasoning? If she was good enough to be betrothed to Ivalon’s “perfect prince,” then surely she must be fit for one of his.

Talk about insult added to injury.

What I loved most about this story is Diaspro herself. She isn’t a passive heroine waiting to be rescued. She’s clever, observant, and constantly calculating how to survive and protect her people. Even when she’s trapped, she’s thinking three steps ahead. Her strength isn’t loud or flashy — it’s quiet resilience and determination, which made her incredibly easy to root for.

The “prisoner to princess” setup creates delicious tension in every scene. She’s living among the very people who destroyed her home, forced to charm princes who either distrust or despise her. Every conversation feels layered with danger. One wrong word could cost her everything. It kept me on edge in the best way.

The romance elements were another highlight. If you prefer clean reads without foul language or spicy scenes (which I know many of us appreciate!), this one fits perfectly. The relationships develop through tension, banter, distrust, and slow emotional shifts rather than physical drama.

The political intrigue also adds depth. There are secrets, hidden motives, and questions you’re constantly trying to untangle. Who can she trust? What is the king really planning? And is marrying the enemy the only way to save her people?

Then came the twist.

Without spoiling anything — let’s just say I stared at the page for a solid minute.

And that cliffhanger ending? Absolutely illegal. I immediately wanted book two. No hesitation.

If you enjoy:

  • clean fantasy romance
  • enemies-to-allies tension
  • strong, smart heroines
  • royal courts and political games
  • and stories that keep you flipping pages way past bedtime

…this one is definitely worth adding to your list.

Overall, Fit for a Prince is an exciting, emotional, and engaging start to the series. It blends danger, heart, and romance beautifully, and I’m already invested in finding out what happens next for Diaspro.

Highly recommend — just maybe don’t start it at 9pm unless you’re prepared to lose sleep. Ask me how I know.
