Silenced by Dani Pettrey

If you enjoy small-town mysteries, outdoor adventure, and a steady thread of suspense, Silenced delivers another solid installment in the Alaskan Courage series — even if the romance didn’t fully win me over this time.

The story kicks off when Kayden McKenna is out rock climbing and literally comes face-to-face with a dead climber on the mountain. What looks like a tragic accident quickly starts to feel suspicious. As questions pile up, Kayden teams up with Jake Westin — reluctantly — to figure out what really happened.

From there, the mystery takes off.

I really enjoyed the investigative side of this book. The climbing scenes and rugged Alaskan setting add such a cool layer of tension, and the danger feels very real. Between strange happenings around town and the growing sense that someone is watching them, the suspense kept me turning pages. Dani Pettrey does such a good job creating that constant “something’s not right” feeling.

Where this one felt a little weaker for me was the romance.

After the first three books, Kayden and Jake have so much history — and not exactly the warm-and-fuzzy kind. Kayden pretty much couldn’t stand him before, so the shift from frustration to romance felt a bit sudden to me. I had a harder time buying into their relationship compared to some of the earlier couples in the series.

That said, it didn’t ruin the story at all. The mystery and family dynamics were still strong enough that I happily kept reading (and immediately moved on to the next book).

As always, I loved spending more time with the McKenna family. That continuing thread of loyalty and protectiveness between siblings is one of my favorite parts of this whole series.

Content-wise, it’s clean with faith naturally woven in, making it another easy pick for teens and adults who enjoy Christian suspense.

If you like:

  • small-town crime mysteries
  • outdoorsy adventure (rock climbing, wilderness settings)
  • protective-hero vibes
  • family-centered stories
  • clean, faith-based romantic suspense

this one is still worth picking up — especially if you’re reading the series in order.

I linked it here if you want to check it out or continue the series.
